<para>Macroalgae data provided by the herbarium housed at IRD Noumea. Data are referred to genus and species of sampled specimens along with taxonomical authorship; phylum/class/order/family taxonomy information are also provided. Information on sampling site and event, including country and locality, date, and parameters like geomorphology,depth, visibility,orientation or collector of the specimens and more are recorded. Each specimen is linked to a species file and named with alphanumeric references related to the field notes (location id or collector id followed by the year of the sampling event and the specimen id:e.i. MQ11-001 for the first specimen collected during the Marquesas (MQ) campaign in 2011), an IRD number IRD-xxxx, related to the dried herbarium collection, and possibly a (PC) id referencing specimen deposited in the collections of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris (MNHN)</para>

              <generalTaxonomicCoverage>Chlorophyta enclose a lot of marine and freshwater species typically green due to chlorophyll a and b prevailing in their chloroplats, they also produce starch. They are commonly named "green algae" and are represented in LAGPLON only by marine species belonging to Ulvophyceae and Chlorophyceae. They sizes and forms vary from a few millimeters (Rhipilia) to several decimeters (Caulerpa) and can display blade, filamentous or foliaceous and membranous shape. Some are calcified (Halimeda, Udotea, etc.) and contribute significantly to sediment accumulation. They take a important part in carbon and carbonates cycles.</generalTaxonomicCoverage>

              <generalTaxonomicCoverage>Chromophyta are mainly marines and multicellular organisms. In addition to a and c chlorophyll, plastids contain large quantities of carotenoid called fucoxanthin . This pigment gives those algae the brown colour and large algae of Phaeophyceae class are usually called brown algae. They offer a great morphological diversity from simple filamentous forms or in ribbon (Dictyota) to complex forms that sometimes (Sargassum) look like the leaf and stem of terrestrial plants. In the tropical waters, most of the species are Dictyotales and Fucales which form perennial algal beds and affect significantly the underwater landscapes.</generalTaxonomicCoverage>

              <generalTaxonomicCoverage>Rhodophyta constitute the group of red algae, they are the most numerous by far and exclusively marines. They contain rhodoplasts where chlorophyll are hidden by supernumerary pigments of phecoerythrin and phycocyanin. Most of those red algae are multicellular and have a wide diversity of forms, filamentous or foliaceous. Some are mucilaginous and delicate or massive and strongly calcareous. The latter are the Corallinaceae and the Sporolithaceae families and are playing a major role in coral reef formation. They also provide fossils from which skeleton can be used for paleoenvironment purposes.</generalTaxonomicCoverage>

  <purpose>
    <para>Created in 1975 by the diving office of the ORSTOM in Noumea (New Caledonia), Lagplon is an information system for marine biodiversity of New Caledonia and other regions of Indo Pacific coral reefs and lagoons. Data collections and marine observations are related to benthic fauna and flora inventories from coastal waters.
Lagplon contributes to overseas taxonomic reference update and is supplying national and international portals. In 2013, the database has more than 15.000 specimens referenced of which 8.000 have been identified at the species level and are providing to the INPN (National Inventory of Natural Patrimoine of the National Museum of Natural History of Paris) and then to the GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) and supported by the IFRECOR initiative and the national strategy for biodiversity.</para>
